Fascinating Mosquito Facts:

  • There are a lot of them! According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency fact sheet, there are over 50 different species of mosquitoes in Minnesota. There are about 200 species in the US and approximately 3,500 throughout the world.
  • Mosquitoes are good at sharing. Mosquitoes carry disease such as Zika, Dengue Fever, Malaria, and West Nile Virus, which can all be transmitted to humans. 500 Million humans are affected by mosquito-borne diseases every year. More than 2 million of those people die. They can also transmit encephalitis and heartworm disease to pets.

  • Only females bite. Mosquitoes go through 4 stages of life: egg, larva, pupa, adult. The female requires a blood meal to lay eggs, otherwise, mosquitoes eat plant nectar.
